File Juicer is a drag & drop can opener and data archaeologist. Its specialty is to find and extract images, video, audio or text from files which are hard to open in other ways.
It finds and extracts: JPEG, JP2, PNG, GIF, PDF, BMP, WMF, EMF, PICT, TIFF, Flash, Zip, HTML, WAV, AVI, MOV, MP4, MPG, MP3, AIFF, AU, WMV or text from files which contain data in those formats.
Lossless extraction... File Juicer does't convert the images/sounds/videos it finds, but saves them unchanged in their original format if possible. See the manual for details.
This is useful:
- if you want to extract the images/sounds/videos from a PDF or Word document
- if you have old files you can no longer open with current applications,
- if you receive emails with attachments you can not open,
- if you have corrupt files or databases,
- if you have damaged or acidentally erased flash cards for your digital camera,
- if you receive "self extracting" EXE files designed for Windows,
- or if this is just faster than copying and pasting from the file.
When you have extracted some files - for instance from an accidentally erased flash card, you can then check that they are intact with QuickTime Player or convert them with other applications. For images, checking validity is done by letting File Juicer generate icons for the files. Then the files with icons are the ones which are intact.
File Juicer has Automator support so you can save just the settings you need and use them directly from Finder.

PAULNOJUSTPAUL This is much belated but I just have to give this app and its dev absolute full points. If you'll bear with me a minute I'll explain why. My dad died in early 2006 in another country. We went over for the funeral and took pictures with my wife's DSLR as a record. A couple of weeks after returning home our house was broken into and several bits of kit were knicked. The camera and the iBook the images were backed up on both went in the hit. They were replaceable, but the images were not. It was heartbreaking having to tell the rest of the family the images were lost. A couple of weeks later our local boys in blue did some above and beyond searching and matched a recently recovered camera with us. The flash card, alas, was blank. Fast forward a month. I vaguely recalled a mention of this utility on a Mac news site, so I thought I'd hunt it down and - just for a laugh - see if it could recover anything from the card. I pretty much broke down in tears when I saw it effortlessly recover pretty much all of the pics we'd taken off this erased flash card. Yes, I know that recovering data from media is not in this day rocket science, but it made a real, tangible difference to me and my family. I know I thanked you privately at the time, Henrik, but I thank you to this day for offering this app. To other readers out there, I'm sure (well, I simcerely HOPE) it will not have such a crucial role in your life, but if you're faced with having to recover flash cards or similar, do give this a try. Again, thank you Henrik. Please know that you made at least two generations of my family happy. (Version 4.10)

KKNOPP You know I could never figure out a use for this software even though it was neat. Thanks for showing me just what this can be used for. And your story was a good one. Things I like to hear on this board. *thumbsup* (Version 4.14)

MONOCLAST Agreed - terrific applicaiton; but an icon like this would be so much better looking, IMO: http://www.electronichealing.co.uk/resources/Image/penguin_juicer_cream.jpg (Version 4.10)

Perhaps you could come up with something original, Monoclast? Anyways, real good app this! (Version 4.10)

DONPA File Juicer is definitely a must-have utility if you do any work with graphics. Pulling a vector file from a PDF publication has repeatedly saved me the time and effort of finding the right person and the correct file in the graphics department of an organization. The application is drag-and-drop-dead-simple. The extracted files are classified/organized in folders. Intuitive is the word - won't need the manual unless you want to tap into even more powerful features (e.g., recovering files off erased flash cards, from damaged files and more). Updates and improvements are introduced on a pretty routine basis. Can't speak for the responsiveness of the developer because I've never had problems that required a response. Juicer truly earns its 5-star rating. Echo One also produces Double Take for making photo panoramas - another ease-of-use winner. If you've never tried making a pano, now's the time. And no, I have no relation to Echo One - just really appreciate apps that make my work a little easier. (Version 4.9.6)

ISAW I'm really please to have bought this app. I have used it more than I was expecting and for the cost of the time that it has saved me, it has already paid for itself. I like that I don't have to work out how to use this app. I just drop my file on the window and the jobs done. A folder appears on my desktop with all the found resources nicely organised in folders with index.html previews of all the images. File Juicer has enabled me to rework Word docs, PowerPoint Files and PowerPoint Shows full of images, PDFs and corrupted PDFs as well as Windows files that I was unable to open at all. I have been able to get to the data I needed with the minimum of fuss. (Version 4.9.4)
